Google AdWords Express

I get the message but am distracted by the creative, I don’t feel the need to try to set up an adwords account but I’m off to find some of the kids toy characters so I can try my hand at stop motion animation.

I had a cry for help recently from an old friend who had moved to Canada or USA not sure which lets just call it the land of Hummingbirds. Her husband had a web site and they had been trying to get it listed on Google they’d been frustrated with this issue for a number of months and when they posted a comment on one of my Facebook updates I offered to have a look.

Two pronged attack

Generally I review a site from two angles, the first is what I used to consider the most important and it deals primarily with the content and in particular if the structure and copy will give the best result from Google. Once I’ve reviewed the content I move onto the site set up to make sure an updated site map is attached and create a relevant robots.txt file.

Robots dot what file?

This was the last thing I checked on my friends site and I wish it had been the first. The robots.txt file is a file used to tell bots which areas of your site they are allowed or disallowed to visit/crawl. My friends site was built on a free hosting package and they had no control over the sitemap.xml file or more importantly the robots.txt file, the contents of their robot.txt file is below.

# Block all bots from the core Homestead site
User-agent: *
Disallow: /~site/

You may have guessed or worked out that the code above will block all bots from visiting/crawling this site so any work done on any other areas of the site will be absolutely pointless.

My latest showerI have some of my best ideas in the shower. idea was for a new business card with a very simple concept. Just give them your name and if you’re any good at this search engine optimisation stuff then you should be the top of the list.

Not Sure It’s Legal

I’m not sure what Google will think of my idea I may have to adjust it so it’s just a search box without the Google logo.

It should be fairly easy to ensure you are the top of the search results if you are operating as an individual, the real test will come if you have a fairly common name or operate as a business (with a common name).

I’ve often sat in either of the major coffee shops and thought to myself that they would make a decent place to work. Having already had that first thought it’s not a giant leap to start consulting in those locations, neutral territory for both parties, free wi-fi, coffee and the occasional pastry.

As I’m not expecting to earn from these consultations I have to limit them to my local coffee shops so Salisbury and Andover would be my locations of choice.

What?

Exactly what it says, we arrange to meet in a local coffee shop and we discuss your issue.

A coffee and maybe a pastry.

What do I get for my money?

A coffee and a pastry will cost less than £5 and I guarantee the meeting will be worth more than that.

So if we just have a friendly chat about the weather or identify a major problem with your internet strategy you will have paid the same price.
